Three American missionaries, including a married couple, were tragically killed by gangs in Port-au-Prince, Haiti on Thursday evening. The victims have been identified as Davy and Natalie Lloyd and Jude Montis. The Lloyds had been serving in Haiti for over two decades through Missions in Haiti, Inc., an organization founded by Davy's parents.
Davy Lloyd, who was fluent in Creole and had a deep love for Haiti, spoke to his son during the attack and heard him begging for help. However, he couldn't locate anyone to send assistance. Later that night, gang members returned and set fire to a house where Davy, Natalie, and Jude Montis were barricaded.
The tragic event comes as Haiti grapples with ongoing gang violence and political instability. At least 13 people have been killed due to heavy rains causing landslides in the country. The main international airport reopened after nearly three months of closure due to gang violence, and President Joe Biden has expressed support for multinational efforts to stabilize Haiti and protect its people.
The Lloyds' loved ones have expressed their grief over the loss. Missouri state Rep. Ben Baker, who is also Davy Lloyd's father, shared his heartbreak on Facebook: 'My heart is broken in a thousand pieces...They went to Heaven together.'
Missions in Haiti has confirmed the deaths of its team members and asked for prayers during this difficult time.
