Two hikers, Albino Herrera Espinoza (52) and Beatriz Herrera (23), from Green Bay, Wisconsin, tragically lost their lives in Canyonlands National Park on June 6, 2021. The pair had set out to hike the Syncline Trail in the Island in the Sky district of the park but got lost and ran out of water during their journey.
The Syncline Trail is known for its challenging terrain and steep elevation change, making it a strenuous hike even under ideal conditions. Temperatures on this day exceeded 100 degrees Fahrenheit, exacerbating the difficulties faced by the hikers.
Despite their misfortune, details about the exact location where they were found have not been released. However, it is noted that most park rescues occur on this trail due to its challenging nature and few trail markers.
The National Park Service describes the Syncline Trail as 'the most challenging trail in the Island in the Sky district.' It is an 8.1-mile loop with a steep elevation change of about 1,500 feet. The trail's sections between rock walls radiate heat and are sometimes referred to as being 'in the oven.'
The tragic incident occurred during a time when excessive-heat warnings were in effect across various parts of the United States. Millions of people experienced back-to-back days with triple-digit temperatures, leading to numerous heat-related fatalities.
This unfortunate event serves as a reminder for hikers and visitors to carry ample water and avoid strenuous activities during the hottest hours of the day, especially during heat advisories. It is crucial to be prepared for the conditions when venturing into national parks, particularly those with challenging trails like the Syncline Trail in Canyonlands National Park.
