A tragic incident occurred in Phoenix, Arizona on July 28, 2024, when a roof collapse at Freeport Logistics resulted in the death of a warehouse worker named Oswaldo Montoya. The collapse was caused by a storm that hit the area earlier in the week.
According to reports from various sources, including Phoenix Fire Department and Arizona's Family, Montoya had been working at the warehouse when the roof collapsed during the storm on July 28. Despite search efforts beginning immediately after the incident, it took three days for his body to be located near the center of the building.
Montoya was described by those who knew him as a hardworking individual and a loving father, son, brother, and son-in-law. His family had been notified of his death following the discovery of his body.
The roof collapse was catastrophic in nature, with racks of products 40 feet tall collapsing when the roof blew off. Crews worked tirelessly to remove tens of thousands of pounds of concrete and debris from the site while also focusing their search efforts on the center and north side of the building.
The incident is currently under investigation by Phoenix Police Department, who will work with the Maricopa County Medical Examiner's office to confirm Montoya's identity. The family has been notified of his death.
Montoya had been working at the warehouse for about a year and was described as a dedicated employee. He was reportedly the only person who did not make it out of the building during the storm.
The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by monsoon storms in Arizona and highlights the importance of workplace safety measures to protect workers from such hazards.
