Corey Comperatore, a former firefighter and father of two, was tragically killed during a shooting at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 19, 2024. The incident occurred while former President Donald Trump was speaking to supporters. According to reports, Comperatore shielded his family from the gunfire before being struck himself.
Comperatore's heroic actions did not go unnoticed as hundreds gathered to pay their respects during a funeral procession in Cabot, Pennsylvania on Friday. The event included bagpipes, a gun salute, and the sounding of taps. Comperatore was described by many as an incredible man who put others before himself.
The shooting also left two other individuals critically injured: David Dutch and James Copenhaver. Both have since been upgraded to serious but stable condition.
Trump, who was also wounded during the incident, paid tribute to Comperatore during his address at the Republican National Convention on Thursday night. The former president called him a 'beloved father and husband' and a 'true American hero.'
Comperatore's last name was misspelled on his fire jacket, with one letter missing. However, this was reportedly done intentionally due to space constraints.
The shooting at the Trump rally has raised concerns about security measures at political events. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro called Comperatore a 'hero' and urged for increased safety protocols moving forward.
Comperatore is survived by his wife, Helen, and two daughters.
