Former President Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday, July 12, 2024. The shooting occurred during a speech Trump was delivering to his supporters in the city of Butler. The FBI is currently investigating the incident as an act of domestic terrorism and has identified the shooter as Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old man from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania.
Trump arrived in Milwaukee on Sunday, July 13, for the Republican National Convention. Despite considering delaying his trip due to the shooting incident, he ultimately decided to attend as scheduled. The convention is expected to begin on Monday and last for four days.
The FBI is still investigating the motive behind Crooks' actions and has not yet released any information regarding a possible motive or connection to any political groups. President Joe Biden called for more respectful discourse and civility in the wake of the assassination attempt, urging Americans to “cool it down”.
Witnesses at the rally reported a lack of security measures beyond the event's perimeter. Valerie Fennell and Deb Kuminkoski, two women who watched the rally from a neighboring property, described seeing bullets fly over their heads as they watched Trump speak. They were located about 150 yards away from where Crooks was perched on the roof of a nearby building.
The Republican National Convention is set to feature several high-profile speakers, including former Vice President Mike Pence, Senators Marjorie Taylor Greene and Ron DeSantis, Dana White, head of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), and Tucker Carlson. Former Presidents George W. Bush and Donald Trump are also expected to attend.
The shooting incident has added an unexpected element to the already contentious political climate in the United States. The FBI's investigation into Crooks' background and motives is ongoing.
