Twisters: $7M Preview Success with 78% Rotten Tomatoes Score and $60M+ Box Office Expectations

Twisters, the reboot of the 1996 Amblin feature co-written by Michael Crichton, is off to a good start with around $7M in preview money from both Wednesday night’s fan Imax/PLF showtimes and previews which began at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Reviews and audience response for the pic starring Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones is great at 78% certified fresh and 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, respectively. That’s better than the original movie which received drab scores at 67% critics, and 58% audience.

Twisters takes place in central Oklahoma, known as Tornado Alley, where scientists, storm chasers, and enthusiasts gather for a once-in-a-generation outbreak of storms. Glen Powell stars as Tyler Owens, a YouTuber who drives towards storms with cameras running. Daisy Edgar-Jones plays Kate McCalister, a resolute meteorologist who has personal stakes in the mission due to her past trauma.

Twisters is expected to open with $50M+ at the box office, but its strong performance in the heartland could raise it to $60M. Another $45M+ is expected from the opening of an additional 38 markets including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, UK and China.

Twisters has a social media universe of 341M across TikTok, Facebook, X, YouTube and Instagram. The Lee Isaac Chung-directed film has earned close to $13M from 38 markets overseas through Monday.

The article contains editorializing and selective reporting. The author expresses his personal opinion that 'cinema will protect us' during a tornado and praises the old-school spectacle of the movie Twisters. He also implies that director Lee Isaac Chung was an unusual choice for this project due to his background in art-house films, but provides no evidence or reasoning for this claim. The author also selectively reports on certain aspects of the film, such as the ensemble cast and personal connections to the characters, while omitting information about the plot or themes that may be relevant to assessing deception. However, there is no clear evidence of emotional manipulation or sensationalism in this article.
    • On the one hand, the quickest way to get a movie made in Hollywood is to slap on a familiar title. On the other hand, you can quickly guess what Chung might have seen in the project...
    • The best way to think about the old-school spectacle of Twisters... When all hell breaks loose, at least cinema will protect us.
    • Yes, much like it is for Helen Hunt's character in the original Twister, it's personal for Kate.
    • But compared with the high-octane de Bont, who was behind hits such as Speed and The Haunting, Chung is a curious choice.

The article contains an appeal to authority fallacy when it states 'Forbes’ Twisters: Bill Paxton’s Son Explains Cameo Appearance In New Movie'. The author is using Forbes as an authority to validate the information about the cameo appearance. However, this does not necessarily mean that the information is true or accurate. Additionally, there are a few instances of inflammatory rhetoric used to describe Tyler's T-shirts and his promotion of himself as 'The Tornado Wrangler'. For example, 'At first, Kate doesn’t take Tyler seriously since he—among other antics—shamelessly promotes himself on jersey T-shirts that feature a caricature sketch of him lassoing a tornado while riding in his storm chasing rig.' This language is unnecessary and biased. However, overall, the article contains very few fallacies.
