Two fatal shootings occurred in Detroit's east side early on the morning of July 7, 2024. According to multiple sources, including Michigan State Police and local news outlets, the incidents took place at separate block parties in the area of Reno Street and Rossini Drive.
The first shooting resulted in the death of a 21-year-old man who was shot in the back. The second shooting claimed the life of a 20-year-old woman, who was fatally wounded by a gunshot to the head. A total of 19 people were injured across both incidents.
Detroit Police and Michigan State Police are currently investigating through their respective departments and jointly through the Homicide Task Force. No suspects have been identified or taken into custody as of yet.
The shootings come amid a surge in gun violence during the summer months, particularly around holidays such as the Fourth of July. The Detroit mayor, Mike Duggan, and police chief James White are expected to hold a joint press conference on Monday to discuss their plans for addressing this issue.
City Councilman Scott Benson expressed concern for community members living in the area and called for increased safety measures.
The victims' conditions include: Victim 1 (21-year-old man): temporary serious condition; Victim 2 (20-year-old woman): deceased; Victim 3 (17-year-old girl): critical condition. Further details on the other injured individuals have not been released.
