Two former law enforcement officers, Harry Dunn and Aquilino Gonell, who defended the US Capitol during the Jan. 6 insurrection faced opposition as they were introduced in Pennsylvania's House of Representatives on separate occasions. While both officers were praised by Democrats for their heroism in defending democracy against rioters, several Republican lawmakers showed disdain towards them.
On June 10, 2024, former Capitol Police officer Harry Dunn and former U.S. Capitol Police Sgt. Aquilino Gonell were introduced by House Speaker Joanna McClinton in Pennsylvania's House of Representatives as part of their tour across the state to discuss the threat they believe former President Donald Trump poses to democracy.
During their visit, Republicans jeered at both officers and several walked out in protest. The response from Republicans underscores the deep division between how Democrats and Republicans view the Jan. 6 attack on the US Capitol.
Similarly, on June 6, 2024, former U.S. Capitol Police officer Harry Dunn was introduced by House Speaker Joanna McClinton in Pennsylvania's House of Representatives as a hero for having bravely defended democracy in the United States Capitol against rioters and insurrection on January 6.
However, several Republican lawmakers hissed and booed during the introduction. About eight to ten Republicans walked out of the chamber in protest.
Meanwhile, Elias Irizarry, a Jan. 6 rioter who participated in the storming of the Capitol wearing a red MAGA hat and carrying a metal pole, is now running for office as part of a primary challenge to a Republican in South Carolina's House of Representatives.
Irizarry initially mentioned his involvement in the Jan. 6 riots on his website bio for transparency but later removed it. Judge Tanya S. Chutkan is currently determining his sentence for his involvement in the riot.
