Two people were killed and nine others were injured during the July 4th celebrations in Manhattan's Lower East Side when a pickup truck crashed into a crowd at Corlears Hook Park. The driver, suspected of driving under the influence, was taken into custody.
The tragic incident occurred around 9 p.m., as people were enjoying their barbeques and festivities in the park. Witnesses reported that the Ford F-150 pickup truck sped through a stop sign at Water Street and Jackson Street, mounted the sidewalk, and plowed into the crowd.
Four victims were pinned under the vehicle, requiring immediate attention from first responders. The New York Police Department (NYPD) and Fire Department of New York (FDNY) arrived on the scene within minutes to extract them from under the truck.
Two people died at the scene, while two others were rushed to local hospitals in critical condition. Four victims are currently in serious condition, three are expected to survive, and two were treated for minor injuries.
The driver was taken into custody after being restrained by witnesses. Officers reported smelling alcohol on his breath and believe that it may have played a role in the incident.
Mayor Eric Adams confirmed that terrorism is not suspected at this time, but the investigation is ongoing.
