Two people were killed and at least six others were injured in a mass shooting that occurred during an unpermitted block party in Memphis, Tennessee on Saturday night. The incident took place in the Orange Mound neighborhood, specifically on Carnes Avenue. No suspects are currently in custody, but police believe that at least two individuals opened fire during the event.
According to reports from multiple sources, between 200 and 300 people were attending the block party when gunshots rang out. Three victims were transported to local hospitals in critical condition, while one of those injured remained in critical condition as of early Sunday morning. Another victim had been discharged from the hospital.
Police initially reported that 16 people had been shot, but later revised the figure down to eight due to some victims being reported multiple times.
The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing, with police urging anyone with information or footage of the incident to come forward. The Memphis Police Department is asking for help in identifying those responsible for the deadly violence.
This tragic event marks yet another instance of gun violence in a city that has seen far too many such incidents this year. According to data from the Gun Violence Archive, there have been over 115 mass shootings reported in the United States so far in 2024, with each incident defined as one where at least four people are shot (excluding the shooter).
The Memphis Police Department and city officials continue to work tirelessly to address this issue and keep their community safe.
