Vasiliy Lomachenko, the two-time Olympic gold medalist and three-time world champion in boxing, successfully reclaimed the IBF lightweight title on May 12, 2024. In a highly anticipated championship bout against George Kambosos Jr., Lomachenko demonstrated his mastery of footwork and technical prowess to secure a victory via TKO in the eleventh round at RAC Arena in Perth, Australia.
Lomachenko, 36 years old and looking to etch his name further into boxing history, traveled Down Under for this opportunity. Kambosos Jr., the former lightweight unified champion from Sydney, had defeated Teofimo Lopez in November 2021 but lost the title to Devin Haney in a unification bout in May 2023.
The fight began with both boxers showcasing their skills. Lomachenko's footwork and agility were on full display, while Kambosos Jr. tried to press the action and land powerful punches. However, Lomachenko's precision proved too much for Kambosos Jr., who struggled to keep up with his opponent.
As the rounds progressed, Lomachenko began to take control of the fight. He outlanded Kambosos Jr. in every round according to Compubox's punch statistics, landing a total of 175 punches compared to Kambosos Jr.'s 40.
In the eleventh round, Lomachenko dropped Kambosos Jr. with a body shot. Although Kambosos Jr. managed to get back on his feet, Lomachenko continued his assault and landed more ferocious body shots, prompting the referee to stop the fight.
With this victory, Lomachenko became a four-time world champion across three different weight classes. He now sets his sights on future opportunities in the boxing world.
