Venice Film Festival 2024: Joker Sequel, Almodovar Debut, and Star-Studded Lineup

The 81st Venice Film Festival is set to showcase a star-studded lineup of films, with several highly anticipated titles announced on July 23, 2024. Among the competition entries are Todd Phillips' Joker: Folie A Deux, featuring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga; Pedro Almodovar's English-language debut The Room Next Door, starring Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore; Luca Guadagnino's Queer, with Daniel Craig, Lesley Manville, and Jason Schwartzman; and Pablo Larrain's Maria, headlined by Angelina Jolie. Other notable films include Jon Watts' Wolfs with Brad Pitt and George Clooney.

Joker: Folie A Deux is the sequel to Phillips' critically acclaimed 2019 film Joker, which starred Phoenix in a groundbreaking performance as the iconic DC Comics character. The new installment promises to continue exploring the complexities of Arthur Fleck's (Phoenix) psyche and his relationship with Harley Quinn (Lady Gaga).

The Room Next Door marks Almodovar's first English-language film, and it features Swinton and Moore in leading roles. The Sony Pictures Classics production is expected to showcase the Spanish auteur's signature blend of dark humor, poignant drama, and intricate storytelling.

Queer is an adaptation of William S. Burroughs' novel of the same name, directed by Luca Guadagnino. The film stars Daniel Craig as Tanner Bolt, a man who becomes embroiled in a dangerous game of cat and mouse with two hitmen (played by Manville and Schwartzman).

Maria is Larrain's latest project, which follows the life of opera singer Maria Callas. Jolie portrays the legendary performer, who was known for her dramatic performances on stage and her tumultuous personal life.

Wolfs is a film by Jon Watts, best known for directing Marvel's Spider-Man: Homecoming. The project reunites him with Brad Pitt and George Clooney, who star in the film alongside Marek Kochanowski and Nick Nolte.

The Venice Film Festival has a rich history of showcasing groundbreaking films and launching careers. With this year's impressive lineup, audiences can expect another unforgettable edition of the prestigious event.
