In a major development for sports streaming, Disney, Fox, and Warner Bros. Discovery have officially named their joint venture 'Venu Sports'. The new platform aims to provide an all-in-one solution for sports fans outside of the traditional pay TV ecosystem. Venu Sports is expected to launch this fall in the US and will bring together a collection of live sports from various networks and direct-to-consumer services.
According to Pete Distad, CEO of Venu Sports, the platform is being built with a focus on delivering a best-in-class product for sports fans. He stated, 'We are excited to officially introduce Venu Sports as a brand that captures the spirit of an all-new streaming home where sports fans can experience an incredible collection of live sports in one place.'
The joint venture was first announced in February 2024 and has been under development since then. The companies have not yet revealed pricing details for Venu Sports, but industry analysts predict it will cost around $40 to $50 a month.
Venu Sports will aggregate content from 14 sports-centric networks and certain direct-to-consumer services. Some of the major networks included are ESPN, ABC, ESPN2, ESPNU, SECN, ACCN, ESPNews, Fox, FS1, FS2, Big Ten Network TNT and truTV.
The launch of Venu Sports is not without challenges. The venture faces a legal challenge from pay-TV company Fubo and resistance from some corners of the industry and federal government due to antitrust concerns.
Despite these challenges, Fox CEO Lachlan Murdoch is optimistic about the potential success of Venu Sports. He projects that the service will attract around 5 million subscribers in five years.
Venu Sports is expected to launch commercially once it receives regulatory approval and finalizes definitive agreements amongst the parties.
