Warren Buffett and Berkshire Hathaway are set to hold their annual shareholder meeting in Omaha on May 3, 2024. This event, often referred to as 'Woodstock for Capitalists,' is a highly anticipated occasion for investors and fans of the legendary investor. However, this year's meeting will be different as Charlie Munger, Buffett's longtime business partner and vice chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, will not be present due to his passing in November 2023 at the age of 99.
Buffett has paid tribute to Munger in his annual letters to shareholders. In the February 2024 letter, he credited Munger as the architect of Berkshire Hathaway and wrote, 'Charlie never sought to take credit for his role as creator but instead let me take the bows and receive the accolades.'
Greg Abel and Ajit Jain will join Buffett at this year's meeting. Abel is Berkshire Hathaway's appointed successor as CEO and head of noninsurance operations, while Jain is the longtime mastermind behind Berkshire Hathaway's reinsurance operations.
Buffett noted challenges to some of Berkshire Hathaway's biggest businesses in his annual letter to investors. These include BNSF railroad, which has faced falling shipment volumes, and its utility business, which has been affected by forest fires. Last month, HomeServices of America agreed to pay $250 million to settle lawsuits over inflated home-sales commissions.
Shareholders are expected to ask about Berkshire Hathaway's signature investments and the company's future post-Buffett. The stock has outperformed Apple, Microsoft, Tesla, and the S&P 500 this year.
CFRA suggests buying undervalued Berkshire Hathaway shares before the annual meeting. Buffett met Munger when they were teenagers working at a grocery store owned by Buffett's grandfather.
