Windows 11 Version 23H2: New Features, Enhancements, and Checkpoint Cumulative Updates Now Available

Microsoft has announced that the Windows 11 23H2 update is now available for all eligible devices. This latest release includes new features and enhancements, such as Microsoft's new AI-powered digital assistant and the Windows Copilot AI-powered digital assistant. Additionally, there are improvements to File Explorer, Dynamic Lighting support, an improved volume mixer, a revamped Windows Spotlight experience, and a new in-depth energy report.

Microsoft started rolling out the update in September for enterprise testing and has now made it broadly available to all users. The company also force-installs the update on eligible systems that were close to or had already reached their end-of-service date.

Users can check for updates manually to install Windows 11 version 23H2. Microsoft recommends checking for updates regularly, as new features and enhancements will be released more frequently using servicing technology in Windows 11 version 23H2.

Microsoft is also introducing a new update concept called checkpoint cumulative updates for both Windows 11 and Windows Server 2025. These updates only contain changes since the previous checkpoint, making them more frequent and granular than differential updates.

However, there are some known issues with the update. For instance, the Photos app might fail to start when BlockNonAdminUserInstall is enabled on some devices. This issue was resolved on July 17, 2024. Additionally, the June 2024 preview update may impact applications using Windows Update APIs.

Microsoft encourages users to check for updates regularly and install them as soon as they become available to ensure they have the latest security features and improvements.

    • 'Microsoft is introducing a new update concept called 'checkpoint cumulative updates' for Windows 11.'
    • Microsoft might periodically release cumulative updates as checkpoints. Subsequent updates would then consist of smaller update package files that contain ’incremental binary differentials against the version of binaries in the last checkpoint.'

No egregious fallacies found. However, there are some problematic statements that blur the line between accurate reporting and misleading language.
    • ] Microsoft previously endeavored to reduce the size of updates via differential downloads, which grab only what has changed. This approach has continued with Windows 11. With version 21H2, Microsoft said, "We introduced smaller downloads to Windows devices by doing range reads to only download and install binary differentials missing on the device. These binary differentials are computed against the RTM version of the binaries."
    • Microsoft is making yet another attempt to combat update bloat with checkpoint cumulative updates coming to both Windows 11 24H2 and Windows Server 2025.
    • Considering how frequently Microsoft releases updates these days, it's surprising that it has taken so long to reach this point.
