Xbox Live, Microsoft's multiplayer gaming and digital media network, experienced a major outage on July 2, 2024. User-reported issues with Xbox Live began to spike at around 2:15 p.m. ET, according to monitoring site Downdetector. As of 3 p.m., over 38,000 outage reports had been logged with the site, with most reports indicating users were having problems logging in. Some Xbox Live users reported seeing an error message stating the service was undergoing 'scheduled maintenance.' Features that require sign-in like most games, apps and social activity were unavailable.

Xbox Live users took to social media to vent about the technical problems. Some reported being unable to log in at all, while others were able to log in but unable to play games such as Destiny 1 and 2. Developer Bungie later confirmed that issues affecting players logging into Destiny 1 and 2 across Microsoft were subsiding.

Microsoft requires users to have an Xbox Live account (which is free to set up) to play games online and access other experiences on the Xbox console, Windows PC, and Xbox mobile apps. The cause of the outage remains unknown at this time.
