Walter “Dobie” Moore was a legendary baseball player known for his time with the Kansas City Monarchs in the Negro National League. Born on January 9, 1895, in Mableton, Georgia, Moore's exact date of birth is difficult to determine due to conflicting reports and limited records. He began his baseball career by playing for various teams in the military during World War II and eventually caught the eye of then-Pirates outfielder Casey Stengel. Moore joined the Kansas City Monarchs in 1920 after his discharge from the Army, becoming their starting shortstop. He was an incredible hitter, skilled defender, and a key player on the team that won two Negro World Series against the Hilldale Club in 1924 and 1925. Moore's career was cut short when he was shot by a woman named Elsie Brown in 1927, leaving him with severe injuries to his leg that never fully healed. Despite the tragic ending to his career, Moore is remembered as one of the best and most influential shortstops in baseball history.
