Evan Yabu is a former professional football player and coach with extensive experience in coaching at various levels. He played a year of professional football in Germany after graduating from Lane College, a historically Black school in Jackson, Tenn., where he became a team captain and started as slot receiver. He also served as player-coach on the baseball team. Yabu has coached football at Thousand Oaks High, Moorpark College, and Camarillo High before becoming the coach at Thousand Oaks in January 2020. During his time at Thousand Oaks, he turned around the struggling football program, leading the team to a 10-0 regular season and their first league title in 21 years before falling in the first round of the Southern Section playoffs. Yabu has a deep knowledge of the Southland football landscape and is highly regarded for his innovative coaching methods, focus on spiritual health, emotional quotient, proper rest, diet, and nutrition. He has assembled a young and innovative staff of assistants from outside the Notre Dame orbit who share his vision for the football program. Yabu was hired as the new football coach at Sherman Oaks Notre Dame High after a thorough search process that involved an advisory committee of administrators, faculty, parents, and alumni. He is expected to bring a fresh perspective and energy to the program.
