Soumya Karlamangla
Soumya Karlamangla is a San Francisco-based reporter for The New York Times, focused on California news and culture. She writes a daily newsletter about the state called California Today. Her fascination with California stems from its vastness and complexity, which she enjoys reporting on from new corners of the state while reflecting its diverse population in her reporting. Before joining The Times in 2021, Karlamangla worked as a reporter at the Los Angeles Times for eight years, where she covered Los Angeles politics and culture, as well as devastating fires and mass shootings across California. She extensively covered the Covid-19 pandemic and its effects on California during her time at the Los Angeles Times. Karlamangla was named a Livingston Award finalist in 2021 for excellence in local reporting for her stories on a nurse in Los Angeles who died of Covid-19. She recently moved from Los Angeles to the Bay Area and is still adjusting to its less sunny climate, although she has become a fan of San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. Karlamangla works hard to make her stories fair and accurate, understanding issues from multiple angles without accepting gifts, money or favors from anyone who might figure into her reporting. She always identifies herself when working as a reporter for The Times and upholds the standards of integrity outlined in their Ethical Journalism Handbook. Karlamangla can be contacted via email at soumya.karlamangla@nytimes.com.
