Mr Emerson, 47, was born in Argentina but holds a British passport. He graduated from the London School of Economics with a degree in psychology and later earned a masters in finance at the University of Reading. He began his career as an analyst at JP Morgan before joining Goldman Sachs in 1999. He worked his way up through various roles, including heading the bank's commodities division in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. In 2018, he was appointed global head of commodities. Under his leadership, the division became one of Goldman Sachs' most profitable units, generating billions of dollars in revenues each year. He is reported to have earned more than chief executive David Solomon last year and will retire after making an estimated $100m over three years in performance-linked bonuses. Mr Emerson is a private figure who prefers to keep a low profile. He enjoys playing polo in his spare time and once pranked his friends by scattering fake snakes around their rental house in Costa Rica.
