Zhang Yiming was born in Hangzhou, China. He graduated from Zhejiang University with a degree in computer science and later obtained his master's degree from the same institution. In 2013, he co-founded Xiaomi Corp., one of China's most successful tech startups. However, he left the company after less than two years due to disagreements with founder Lei Jun over product strategy and vision. He then moved to Hong Kong in 2015 and started working on his new venture, Country Garden Holdings Co., a property developer that is one of China's largest private firms. He took over as CEO in January 2018 after the sudden death of his father, Li Xiongping, who founded the company.
