AC Barker joined the WTVC team in October 2023. She was born and raised in Nashville, Tennessee and is excited to be back in her home state. AC attended the University of Mississippi’s Journalism and New Media program for both undergrad and graduate school. She was involved in the school’s Student Media Center where she was a reporter, producer, and news director for NewsWatch Ole Miss, the university’s student-run news station. AC got her first job in broadcast journalism as a weekend anchor and producer at a news station in Tupelo, Mississippi, while she completed her second year of graduate school. She also loves traveling back home to see her family and her hometown friends. One fun fact about AC is that she jumped out of a plane in South Africa while studying abroad one summer!

The Daily's Verdict

This author has a mixed reputation for journalistic standards. It is advisable to fact-check, scrutinize for bias, and check for conflicts of interest before relying on the author's reporting.

Bias

50%

Examples:

  • The author uses biased language by implying that the UAW is a positive force for workers without providing any context or counterarguments.
  • The author uses loaded words like 'petition' and 'Monday' to create a sense of urgency and importance around the UAW issue.

Conflicts of Interest

100%

Examples:

  • The author is likely biased in favor of the UAW due to his/her affiliation with a news station that covers local stories. This creates a conflict of interest between his/her personal views and professional duty to report objectively.
  • The author may have access to inside information or insider sources about the UAW issue that are not available to other reporters. This could give him/her an unfair advantage in covering the story.

Contradictions

85%

Examples:

  • The author does not mention any reasons why Volkswagen gave its workers a pay raise in November or how it relates to their unionization efforts. This contradicts the idea that workers are unhappy with their current conditions and need the UAW to improve them.
  • Two previous votes to bring the UAW to Chattanooga failed, in 2014 and 2019. This is a major contradiction that undermines the author's claim of momentum for the unionization effort.

Deceptions

50%

Examples:

  • The author uses selective reporting by only mentioning Volkswagen's pay raise but not providing any context or comparison with other auto plants. This creates a false impression that Volkswagen is unique in treating its workers well and that the UAW is necessary for improvement.
  • The author uses sensationalism by stating that Volkswagen of Chattanooga workers are filing a petition to join the United Auto Workers (UAW) on Monday. This statement implies urgency and importance when there is no indication that this event has actually taken place yet or if it will happen at all.
