La Velle E. Neal III is a sports reporter for the Star Tribune covering the Minnesota Vikings and Timberwolves. He has been with the newspaper since 2019 after working as a national baseball writer for ESPN.com. Neal grew up in St. Paul, Minn., and graduated from Macalester College in 1987 with a degree in English-creative writing. He began his journalism career at the Pioneer Press, where he covered high school sports before moving on to college football and basketball. He has written two books: 'The Heart of It All,' which chronicles the life and times of Gophers coach Tim Brewster in 2010, and 'Pitch by Pitch,' a day-by-day account of the Twins' historic collapse in 2011. Neal has been honored with several awards for his writing, including Minnesota Sports Writer of the Year from 2013 to 2016 and National Football League Writers Association Good Guy Award in both 2014 and '95. He is a member of the Fargo Moorhead Baseball Hall of Fame Class of 2017. Neal lives in St. Paul with his wife, Amy, and their two children.
