Stephen Smith
Stephen Smith was a young man from Hampton County, South Carolina. Born as a preemie weighing only two pounds and twelve ounces, he defied the odds and survived with the help of his mother Sandy Smith. Stephen had dreams of becoming a doctor but instead found himself working in nursing school due to financial constraints. He was described as a fighter who held his head high despite facing bullying in school due to his sexuality. In July 2015, Stephen's body was found on the side of the road with no signs of vehicle debris or broken headlights, leading to a hit-and-run investigation. However, Sandy Smith had her doubts about the official cause of death and worked tirelessly for years to find answers. The case gained renewed attention when Alex Murdaugh, a prominent figure in Hampton County and three generations removed from the top prosecutor job, was arrested for the murders of his wife and son in 2019. Frustrated by a lack of progress in Stephen's case, Sandy Smith is working with a team of lawyers and experts to find out what happened to her son.
