Huw GRIFFITH

Huw Griffiths is a marine biologist from British Antarctic Survey (BAS) who studies the rich marine life of Antarctica. He presents findings on the distribution and abundance of more than 6,000 different species living on the sea-floor, many of which are unique to the icy continent. He also describes how krill populations are reducing as a result of decreasing sea-ice cover and how this affects predators like penguins that breed on the ice. Griffiths is involved in a major international investigation into Antarctic marine biodiversity, called Census of Antarctic Marine Life (CAML). He says that polar regions are among the fastest warming places on Earth and that sea-ice reduction, rising ocean acidification and decreasing winter sea ice will have direct effects on marine life. Griffiths is an expert in how polar animals adapt to environmental change and how they can serve as indicators of global climate change.
