Alex Williams

Alex Williams is a reporter on the Obituaries desk of The New York Times. He focuses on the luminaries of music, film, art, photography and related fields, but has also written about contemporary philosophers, explorers, rodeo stars, chefs and 1960s activists as well as many athletes. Alex joined The Times in 2004 as a reporter on the Styles desk and spent 18 years writing profiles of celebrities, tastemakers, entrepreneurs and other notables before moving to the Obituaries desk in summer 2022. He grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles region, graduating from the University of California, Berkeley with a degree in rhetoric. Before joining The Times, he worked as a reporter for two newspapers in Orange County, California before moving to New York where he took a job as a fact checker at New York magazine and ended up spending over twelve years there as a writer. He is committed to the core principles of The Times, reporting objectively on all topics free from political or philosophical bias.
