In 1994, O.J. Simpson pleaded not guilty in Los Angeles to the killings of his ex-wife, Nicole, and her friend, Ronald Goldman. Associated Press Oct. 3, 1995: Simpson is acquitted in the criminal trial for murder. Feb. 5, 1997: In a civil case, Simpson is found liable for the wrongful death and battery of Goldman and for battery against Nicole Brown Simpson. In 1997, a civil jury heaped $25 million in punitive damages on O.J. Simpson for the slayings of his ex-wife and her friend, on top of $8.5 million in compensatory damages awarded earlier.
