Fred Katz,
Fred Katz was a versatile musician who made significant contributions to the world of jazz and classical music. As a classically trained cellist, he quite accidentally elevated his instrument to prominence in jazz. He was best known for his long association with the Chico Hamilton Quintet and also worked as a pianist, composer, arranger, and professor of anthropology. In addition to playing with the Chico Hamilton Quintet, Katz accompanied Lena Horne, wrote songs for Frankie Laine and film scores for Roger Corman, arranged music for Carmen McRae and taught anthropology at various universities. His unique ability to play the cello using both pizzicato and bowing techniques set him apart in the jazz world. Katz joined the Chico Hamilton Quintet primarily as a pianist but began playing the cello on ballads, eventually incorporating it into up-tempo numbers as well.
