Buffalo News

The Buffalo News is a major news organization based in Buffalo, New York. It was founded in 1880 and has since been led by several notable editors. In 1998, Margaret M. Sullivan became the editor of The Buffalo News, making her the first woman to hold this position and only the sixth person since the newspaper's founding. She had previously served as the managing editor for 19 months and has a background in hard news and features journalism. Under her leadership, The Buffalo News has focused on enterprise stories that go beyond the headlines, prioritizing deep coverage of local news while still covering sports, movies, and weather. Sullivan's tenure at The Buffalo News has been marked by an emphasis on serious, aggressive local reporting. Prior to joining The Buffalo News, Sullivan was an intern reporter and then a business writer, government reporter, news-feature writer, and columnist at the newspaper. She also spent five years as a stringer for the New York Times in Buffalo and six weeks in Calcutta, India as part of the Rotary Foundation's program for international understanding. Her investigative work while covering Erie County government helped uncover causes of a $100 million fiscal crisis that nearly bankrupted the county, which she considers one of her proudest accomplishments as a newswoman. Sullivan grew up in Lackawanna and graduated from Nardin Academy before attending Georgetown University and Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism. She is married to Charles Anzalone, editor of The News First Sunday Magazine, and they have two children together.
