Ian Austen

Ian Austen is a journalist who reports on Canada for The New York Times based in Ottawa. He covers people and events throughout Canada with a focus on politics at the federal and provincial levels, as well as Indigenous stories and overlooked issues or Canadian communities. Austen began his career writing about technology for The Times in the late 1990s before transitioning to covering Canada more broadly in 2003. He has also reported extensively on professional cycling and the Tour de France, and has worked for magazines such as Maclean's, Southam News, and contributed to CBC Radio. Austen grew up in Windsor, Ontario, attended journalism school at Toronto Metropolitan University, and adheres to The New York Times' Ethical Journalism Handbook. Stronach was arrested outside Toronto and will appear at Ontario Court of Justice on July 8. He recently donated Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore to the state after a legal dispute with his daughter Belinda Stronach.
