Lisa Fernandez

Lisa Fernandez is an award-winning journalist with more than 30 years of experience in the Bay Area. She covers a wide range of topics including civil rights cases, immigration and education issues, as well as breaking news and the Oakland Police Department's federal oversight. Lisa has worked for various media outlets such as the San Jose Mercury News, LA Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Reuters, NBC Bay Area and DemocRAT & Chronicle in Rochester, New York. She is also an adjunct professor at San Jose State University and holds a master's degree in journalism from Medill at Northwestern University. In her free time, Lisa volunteers with the Society of Professional Journalists at San Quentin Prison to help incarcerated men improve their writing and reporting skills, coaches high school seniors for college essay writing, and teaches various exercise classes including spin, yoga, aqua and body sculpting.
