Joe Fitzgerald

Joe Fitzgerald is a talented coin designer who gained fame when his designs for a new nickel were chosen by the United States Mint. His unique portrait of Thomas Jefferson, which has a larger nose compared to previous depictions and is controversially off-center, was introduced by President Bush in March 2005. Fitzgerald's design for the reverse side of the nickel, replacing a bison by Jamie Franki, would be unveiled in August 2005. His designs were expected to be highly collectible and widely hoarded, potentially making them some of the most valuable coins in American history. At the time of the article, Fitzgerald was working as the chief of graphics at the National Library of Medicine in Bethesda, Maryland.
