Andrew Dalton | AP

Andrew Daulton Lee was a former drug dealer who was convicted of espionage for his involvement in the Cold War spying activities of his childhood friend, Christopher Boyce. Lee graduated from Palos Verdes High School and became involved in espionage after Boyce, an employee of US defense contractor TRW, began stealing classified documents to deliver to Soviet agents. Lee traveled to Mexico City with the stolen documents at Boyce's direction and used his share of the profits from the espionage ring to further his drug business. Lee was arrested in front of the Soviet embassy in Mexico City in 1977, confessed to espionage under interrogation, and was convicted later that year. He was sentenced to life in prison but eventually released on parole in 1998. After his release, Lee briefly worked for actor Sean Penn as his personal assistant.
