Maria
Maria Muñoz's case involved the tragic death of a 31-year-old woman allegedly caused by intoxication and a mix of multiple different drugs on September 22, 2020. Her husband, Joel Pellot, an anesthesiologist, was arrested following initial evidence pointing towards suicide or an accident. After a thorough investigation with inconclusive evidence, the trial concluded with Pellot being held guilty of Maria's murder and tampering of evidence. He is currently serving a life sentence at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. The autopsy report failed to clarify doubts on the manner of death, but the presence of morphine and other drugs in Maria's body implicated her husband. Pellot had access to various drugs both in and outside the medical field. Despite his claims that he and Maria would sometimes like to get high, the presence of profonol in her body proved otherwise. The investigation also obtained Maria's journal, which revealed her unhappy marriage and lack of suicidal thoughts or behavior. Pellot was having an affair with Janet Arrendondo and planned to end his marriage with Maria for her. The strongest evidence against him was the presence of propofol in Maria's body; this drug is restricted to the operating theater as it can stop respiration and requires external oxygen supply. Pellot was found to be the most probable source of propofol for Maria. Both sides presented strong arguments in court, but Joel Pellot was held guilty of his wife's murder and tampering with evidence on March 30, 2023. The trial also revealed that he pushed Maria's sister to agree to cremation, claiming it was what Maria always wanted. Maria Muñoz's case is also featured in an episode of CBS 48 Hours titled 'The Journals of Maria Muñoz,' airing on December 16, 2023 at 10 p.m. ET.
