The Texas Tribune is a nonprofit digital news organization that provides in-depth and unbiased coverage of Texas politics, policy, and issues. It was founded in 2009 by venture capitalist John Thornton with the mission to empower Texans with civic information they need to participate in their democracy. The Tribune covers a wide range of topics including education, health care, immigration, criminal justice, energy, social services and infrastructure among others. It also offers explainers and analysis on major issues affecting Texas. The organization is funded through a diversified business model that includes memberships, major donations from individuals and foundations, corporate sponsorships, events and other revenue streams. Editorial decisions are made by journalists alone without influence from donors.
