The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has found no link between COVID-19 vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna and sudden cardiac death among previously healthy young persons based on an analysis of 1,300 death certificates in Oregon.
According to the CDC report published on April 11, 2024, only three deaths occurred within 100 days of vaccination out of the total number analyzed. None were attributed to the vaccine as an immediate or contributing cause.
Thirty young people in Oregon died from COVID-19 during the same time frame but most were not vaccinated.
The study was initiated following concerns raised after Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field during a Monday Night Football game in January 2023. Hamlin, who recovered, was later resuscitated and returned to play for the team last season.
Dr. Paul Cieslak, co-author of the study from Oregon Health Authority's public health division, stated that they were trying to address such concerns with this analysis.
The data does not support an association between COVID-19 vaccines and sudden cardiac death among previously healthy young persons.
It is important to note that no vaccine has ever been conclusively linked to sudden cardiac death. Although the COVID vaccine has been associated with a small risk of heart inflammation, called myocarditis, it typically resolves in a few days and most people fully recover.
Dr. Leslie Cooper from the Mayo Clinic added that this study adds evidence that people do not drop dead from getting their mRNA Covid vaccines.
