A boil water advisory has been issued for all residents in the District of Columbia, the Pentagon, Arlington National Cemetery, and Reagan National Airport due to a drop in water supply from the Washington Aqueduct.
The advisory was issued by DC Water on Wednesday after higher levels of turbidity were observed in water held at the Aqueduct. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began washing filters, made necessary chemical adjustments, and brought alternate filters online for additional treatment capacity.
Customers are advised to boil their water before consuming it and to discard any beverages or ice made after 9 p.m. on Wednesday.
All customers should run cold water, bring it to a rolling boil for at least one minute and let it cool before drinking it or using it to brush teeth, prepare food, wash food, prepare infant formula, make ice, wash dishes or give to pets.
DC Water warns against using home filtering devices in place of boiling water.
Arlington County has also issued a Boil Water Advisory for the entire county as a precaution.
The advisory will remain in place until follow-up testing confirms the water is safe to drink.
