SPRINGFIELD, IL - In a series of tragic events that unfolded on the night of July 6, 2023, former Sangamon County Sheriff's Deputy Sean Grayson fatally shot Sonya Massey inside her own home. The incident occurred after Massey called the authorities for assistance due to a suspected intruder. Sonya Massey, a resident of Springfield, Illinois, contacted the Sangamon County Sheriff's Office around 1:00 AM on July 6 to report a possible prowler outside her home. Deputies Sean Grayson and another unidentified deputy arrived at the scene shortly after.
Upon entering Massey's residence, the deputies asked for identification from her while she sat on a sofa. Massey then got up to move a pot of hot water from the stove to the sink. During this action, she said 'I rebuke you in the name of Jesus.'
