Severe Storms Leave Four Houston Schools Damaged, Thousands Without Power: HISD Assessing Situation for Monday Reopening

In the aftermath of Thursday's severe storms in Southeast Texas, several school districts have announced their plans for reopening. Houston Independent School District (HISD) reported that four schools sustained significant damage and several others lacked power as of Sunday.

According to HISD Superintendent Mike Miles, the ultimate decision on whether classes will resume on Monday will depend on how many schools have regained power by then. As of Saturday, 90 out of 136 HISD campuses were still without electricity.

Tomball ISD announced that classes would resume on Monday following extensive debris cleanup and electricity restoration. Cypress-Fairbanks ISD will remain closed due to travel safety concerns and lack of power. Spring Branch ISD also plans to stay closed as about 70% of their campuses still lacked power, with daily updates provided for Tuesday's status.

Meanwhile, Cleveland ISD confirmed that all its campuses and facilities will be open and operating as normal on Monday.

Four schools in Houston ISD sustained significant damage during the storms. Several other HISD schools didn't have power on Sunday. The district is still assessing the situation to determine if students will need to make up missed days due to school closures.

The storms caused extensive damage across Southeast Texas, leaving many families and communities in a state of recovery.
