Steve Bannon to Report to Prison for Contempt of Congress as Supreme Court Rejects His Appeal

Former Trump aide Steve Bannon is set to report to prison on July 1, 2023, after the Supreme Court rejected his request for a reprieve. Bannon was convicted of two counts of contempt of Congress in July 2022 for defying a subpoena from the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

Bannon had argued that he should not have to comply with the subpoena because former President Donald Trump had asserted executive privilege over the information requested. However, this argument was rejected by both a lower court and ultimately by the Supreme Court.

Despite receiving an extension from the appeals court to ask for their full bench to take up his appeal, Bannon's request was denied by the Supreme Court on July 1. This means that he will begin serving his four-month prison sentence as scheduled.

Bannon is not the first former Trump aide to be sentenced for contempt of Congress in relation to the Jan. 6 investigation. Peter Navarro, another ex-advisor to Trump, served his own four-month sentence earlier this year.

The House committee was formed to investigate the events leading up to and following the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021. The panel had set its sights on Bannon due to his involvement in efforts to overturn the election results and his comments predicting that 'all hell is going to break loose' on January 6.

Bannon's prison sentence comes as he faces separate criminal charges related to fundraising for Trump's border wall campaign. He has pleaded not guilty to these charges and is awaiting trial.
