Two recall elections are set to take place in November 2024 against District Attorneys Pamela Price of Alameda County, California, and Jose Garza of Travis County, Texas. The recalls were initiated due to concerns over their progressive policies that some argue are jeopardizing community safety.
In the case of Pamela Price, she became the first Black District Attorney in Alameda County in 2022 and ran her campaign on a platform of social justice reform. However, critics argue that her policies have led to an increase in crime. The recall effort against Price gathered enough valid signatures to trigger a recall election but faced opposition from supporters who believe the consolidation of the vote with the November general election will result in more voter turnout and provide more time for citizens to be informed.
Price's opponents started the recall signature gathering campaign soon after her election due to their dissatisfaction with her progressive, reform-minded platform. Since then, crime in Oakland, Alameda County's largest city, has fallen by 30 percent compared to 2023 according to Oakland Police Department data.
Price's supporters have formed The Protect the Win for Public Safety and will hold a news conference on May 15 at Everett & Jones BBQ in Oakland. Meanwhile, the recall campaign is being financed by two separate political action committees: Save Alameda For Everyone and Supporters of Recall Pamela Price. Major contributors to the recall campaign include wealthy individuals and big companies in real estate, construction, finance, and tech.
In Travis County, Texas, Jose Garza was backed by significant financial support from George Soros during his election campaign in 2018. Since taking office, homicides in Austin have hit a record high during his first year and have remained high since. Garza has been criticized for denying victims their constitutional right to provide victim impact statements for plea deals and probation decisions.
Crime victims and their families are leading the charge against both DAs, aiming to restore accountability in the criminal justice system.
