The U.S. men's gymnastics team ended a long-standing Olympic medal drought by winning the bronze medal at the Paris Olympics on Monday, July 29, 2024. The team's success came down to Stephen Nedoroscik, who specializes in only one of six events and played a crucial role in securing the podium finish for Team USA.
Nedoroscik stayed focused before his routine on the pommel horse event, appearing calm and collected despite the pressure. His performance helped Team USA close the gap behind Japan and China, who took gold and silver respectively.
The U.S. women's gymnastics team also made headlines at the Olympics when Simone Biles tweaked her lower left leg during floor warmups but still competed in the qualifying session for the all-around final. Despite her injury, she managed to perform a Yurchenko double pike on the vault and received a thumbs up from her mother, Nellie Biles.
The U.S. men's team had finished fifth at the previous Olympics in Tokyo three years ago with a six-point deficit before competition began. However, they showed resilience and determination this time around, with Brody Malone leading the charge by having short-term memories for their uncharacteristic falls during qualification.
The U.S. women's gymnastics team also had a successful day at the Olympics, finishing first in Olympic qualifying with 172.296 points, more than five points ahead of Italy.
Biles and Suni Lee will compete in the all-around final on Tuesday night, while Jordan Chiles finished fourth in the all-around qualifying session.
The U.S. men's team's bronze medal marks their first Olympic medal since 2008, a significant achievement for USA Gymnastics and Team USA.
