Alex Marshall

Alex Marshall is a European culture reporter for The New York Times based in London. He covers major news such as thefts from the British Museum and writes about life across Europe, focusing on stories where the arts illuminate wider social or political issues. Alex has explored how Russia's invasion of Ukraine has affected artists, dancers, and pop stars in both countries; looked at how rap music became the lightning rod for Sweden's problems with gang warfare; and investigated when - if ever - looted artifacts will be returned to their countries of origin. Prior to joining The Times, Alex was a freelance journalist for the BBC and The Guardian, among other publications. He also wrote a book called 'Republic or Death!: Travels in Search of National Anthems', which took him around the world, including stops in Paraguay and Nepal, meeting with guerrilla fighters as well as composers. Alex grew up in Goodmayes, a town on the fringes of East London, and as a teenager got started in journalism by writing his own music fanzine before selling it in dingy music venues across the British capital. He still spends much of his spare time visiting these same venues, hoping to discover his next favorite band. Alex also spent a decade as an environmental journalist, covering climate change and waste policy. He adheres to the values and standards of integrity outlined in The Times' Ethical Journalism Handbook and takes seriously the journalistic ethics involved in reporting on complex or challenging issues such as allegations of inappropriate conduct against movie stars. Alex accepts free tickets for events to aid his reporting but would never accept remuneration from any cultural institution, or let hospitality influence his work. He does not go on press junkets and if he travels for work, The Times pays his expenses.

The Daily's Verdict

This author has a mixed reputation for journalistic standards. It is advisable to fact-check, scrutinize for bias, and check for conflicts of interest before relying on the author's reporting.

Bias

85%

Examples:

  • Alex frequently praises the talents and accomplishments of the individuals and productions he covers, such as Nicole Scherzinger in 'Sunset Boulevard' and Cillian Murphy in 'Oppenheimer'.
  • There is a tendency to include context about political or social issues related to the subject matter, which can make the articles seem more impactful.

Conflicts of Interest

50%

Examples:

  • Alex occasionally accepts free tickets for events to aid his reporting, which could be seen as a conflict of interest.

Contradictions

86%

Examples:

  • In another article, the statement that 'Oppenheimer' swept the board at the EE British Academy Film Awards is misleading as it only won seven awards.
  • In one article, Sarah Snook is awarded best actress for her role in 'The Picture of Dorian Gray', but the award was actually for a solo show where she played all 26 roles herself. This contradiction implies that Snook's performance was part of an ensemble cast when it was actually a one-person show.

Deceptions

71%

Examples:

  • Articles often lack context or comparison to other nominees or related productions, which can make the subjects seem more impressive than they actually are.
  • In one article, Alex claims that 'Oppenheimer' won four major awards at the Golden Globes including best film and director, when in fact it won three awards: best drama, best director, and best actor.
