Reporter Darronté Matthews is an Illinois Broadcasters Association award-winning journalist joining the FOX6 team as a reporter. Before coming to FOX6, Darronté spent four years at the CBS/FOX affiliate stations WMBD/WYZZ-TV in Peoria, IL. There he was promoted multiple times from multimedia journalist, to reporter, to weekend anchor, and main anchor. He was a part of the Edward R. Murrow award-winning town hall program "Together We Rise," which explored local race relation issues after the murder of George Floyd. Some of Darronté's notable breaking news, investigative and high-profile coverage in Peoria included the Illinois gubernatorial race, the unsolved death of Illinois State University student Jelani Day, the murder trial for the parents of 8-year-old Navin Jones and investigating why teens steal cars. Being fluent in both English and Spanish, he has also done bilingual reporting. Darronté got his start in the news industry in 2014 at the PBS-affiliate station WEIU-TV in Charleston, IL. He started as a production assistant and eventually became a general assignment reporter and anchor. Darronté's love for journalism ignited from watching news with family in his hometown of Chicago.
