He was known for his dedication to the team and attended every game, earning him the nickname 'The Undertaker' due to his suit-wearing attire. Thomas had recently buried his father and was accompanied by two of his grandchildren on the flight, as their parents remained in Amsterdam for a few extra days. The family had planned to return to Australia in time for school, but unfortunately, they were caught up in the tragic events that unfolded over rebel-held territory near Donetsk. Thomas's death was described as an 'act of terrorism' and left a massive hole in the Newcastle community.
