Hamza Howidy
Hamza Howidy is a Palestinian from Gaza City. He was born in the late 1990s and is one of six children. Hamza witnessed the rise of Hamas and its takeover of the Gaza Strip, which began with promises of change and reform but quickly turned into oppression, terrorization, and silencing dissent through violence, character assassination, and imprisonment. As a student at the Islamic University of Gaza, Hamza observed how Hamas manipulated elections for student councils and clubs to favor its members while suppressing freedom of speech. He also saw how the quality of life in Gaza deteriorated under Hamas's rule due to economic collapse, increasing taxes on necessities, limited job permits and electricity, a widening wealth gap between the elite who belonged to Hamas and the rest of the population living in dire poverty, and public sector jobs being limited to Hamas members.
