Kenneth P.

Kenneth P. Thompson was the first black district attorney of Brooklyn and a voice for racial justice at a moment of tension between law enforcement and minority communities. He was elected in 2013 after campaigning on a platform of reform and racial justice, unseating Charles J. Hynes, a fellow Democrat who had served more than 20 years. During his tenure, he established a policy of not prosecuting most low-level marijuana arrests and created a robust internal unit that reviewed questionable convictions. He also chose to prosecute and eventually won the case of Peter Liang, the former New York City police officer who fatally shot an unarmed black man in 2014. Thompson decided not to seek prison time for Liang, which led to protests. In his personal life, he was a former federal prosecutor who went on to have a successful private law practice.
